Walter was born in Grantchester in 1893 (Chesterton Q2-1893 3B:481), baptised Grantchester 9th July 1893, son of John Jolly and Susannah BRASNETT
(née DURRANT).
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at 1a/22 York Terrace, Grantchester, with his father John BRASNETT [52] journeyman miller born in Garvestone, Norfolk; his mother Susannah [52] born Garvestone, sisters Maude [16] and Ethel [13] and brother Thomas [11]. All the children were born in Grantchester. 1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was at Six Mile Bottom, with his parents, brothers Archibald, John and Thomas,(all farm labourers), and also Louis COVILL [29] born Bottisham Lode and Ethel COVILL [23] born Grantchester (probably sister and her husband). In 1913 he married Edith Maud CARSBOULT [30-8-1896 (Chesterton-Q3 1913 3B:1099). They had one son, Francis John Kitchener Brasnett (24-3-1916-2013) The pension card puts his widow and son at Six Mile Bottom His elder brother Archibald Brasnett died of his wounds on 25th April 1917 in England. see here |

He enlisted in Newmarket. In the Battle of the Lys, the 11th Suffolks were in Reserve but due to the collapse of the Portuguese on 9th April were actually the first into action. The action was so fluid that of the 119 of the battalion killed in the period, 53 have their date of death as between 9th and 19th April, Walter being one of these. |
